A few times I was assigned to the role of Program Manager or Portfolio Manager with one main goal: organize or improve a group of different projects and make them manageable and reported to the customer in an organized way. One time it was internal tower reorganization, another time it was Projects’ Portfolio for an external customer. In both situations I was wondering how I should start and which of the two concepts: Portfolio Management or Program Management should be used to manage that situation.

During the 11th International PMI Poland Chapter Congress you gave a speech titled “Leading Projects in Turbulent Times”. Why did you choose this topic?  I decided to talk about leadership in this moment because I think this is one of the things that are missing most of the time when we are leading. We usually tend to see this turbulence as an external factor that we have no control over. But in reality we can make a very proactive approach when we are talking about leadership in this kind of projects, so you can change the way you plan, you can change the way you behave in order to address this turbulence.

Strefa PMI nr 36, Marzec 2022

Before we start, I would like to emphasize that the topic of this article discusses the agile transformation of the HR department in progress, which means that the first phase of the organizational change in the company has been done. What exactly does it mean? It means fulfilling the basic elements of transformation like the appropriate life cycle of the company and its culture, both ready for change, a competent leader of change, and – last but not least – support from the management board. Only when these are met, we can introduce changes effectively, without the risk of failure of the transformation itself or damaging the company’s operations. The better set we provide at the beginning, the better chance we have for the success of our endeavours. After clarifying the assumptions, let’s get back to the HR department and what we can improve there during our agile transformation.

Based on our experience there are a few things to watch out for when starting up your first scaled teams’ setup, your first Agile Release Train and then when it is already running full steam ahead. There are many things that can go wrong and the only thing you could be sure of is that some of them will absolutely arise sooner or later. The main thing is for you to be prepared for the worst-case scenario. If you won’t have it – lucky you! If you will face it, you can immediately react.

What if you would organize your company without any management? Without any rules? Would that work? A company, where you decide on your own salary together with your team? Utopia? It is not. At our company – Finext – in the Netherlands, we make it work for already 20 years. At the beginning of 2016, the company has about 150 employees. And about 100 owners.

In previous article (Strefa PMI no 20, pages 18-19) you can read about User Experience general concept. In this reading I will try to answer what kind of tools can help to take the most of this approach. There is a common saying that the customer is always right. Is it really the case? Henry Ford stated “If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses”. Customer is the core of any user experience method. Let’s have a look what UX tools can help to identify and uncover the real customer’s needs. In many cases customers are not fully aware of their needs. This is the great starting point to utilize UX method.

Even having an astonishing and marvelous idea, in the business area, someone will finally ask: “Will it pay off?” Most economic assessment methods require specific information on the estimated income and costs. As long as we solve a complicated problem with a low level of ambiguity, we can develop a detailed plan and an accurate cost estimation. But how do we decide on the project undertaking if we don’t know yet what the final product will look like and what resources we need for the execution?

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic the focus of workers has shifted from the regular 9 to 5 to flexible hours. Although remote working has brought a lot of perks and the possibility to combine work with a private life, it has also led to many of us working longer than ever before – in fact many of us are not so much working at home as living at work. In order to avoid being hit hard by burn out and to stay engaged and committed we must embrace the importance of a healthy work calendar.
